In August 1949, then President Harry S. Truman announced that June 14th would from then on be celebrated as Flag Day. Barre City celebrated June 14th as Flag Day at the Gazebo Park, with ceremony of several speakers stating that our flag was not just a piece of cloth, but a symbol of liberty, justice, equality, tolerance and ideals. Commander/President of VFW 790 Fred Parsons led the ceremonies, Senator Bill Doyle was the key note speaker and the Barre-Tones provided patriotic songs about the flag.
